Tea Oasis

About This Product

The drink this café was named for. Our signature karak is brewed thick and strong — the Urdu word ‘karak’ means concentrated, and that’s exactly what this is. Black tea simmered long with cardamom, saffron, and evaporated milk until it’s deep amber, warmly spiced, and genuinely satisfying. The natural companion to every chapati we serve.

Description

The Drink This Café Was Named For

We didn’t choose ‘Tea Oasis‘ as a brand name at random. The name was chosen because karak tea — thick, spiced, slow-brewed — is the kind of drink that stops you. That makes a moment. That turns a busy morning into something worth pausing for.

In Saudi Arabia and across the Gulf, karak isn’t just tea. It’s the first drink of the day, the drink you offer a guest before anything else, the drink that appears at every gathering from family breakfasts to late-night conversations. This is what we serve, and this is the drink that defines what we are.

Where ‘Karak’ Comes From — A Name That Tells the Whole Story

The word ‘karak’ comes from the Urdu word meaning ‘strong,’ ‘concentrated,’ or ‘double.’ It’s an accurate description: karak tea is prepared with more tea leaves, longer brewing, and a higher proportion of milk than standard tea, resulting in a cup that’s noticeably richer and more intensely flavoured than anything a standard teabag can produce.

The drink’s origin traces to the Indian subcontinent, where British colonial expansion in the 19th century introduced tea cultivation. Indian chaiwallas — street tea vendors — developed their own tradition of boiling tea with milk, sugar, and aromatic spices, creating what became known as masala chai. As South Asian migrant workers arrived in Gulf countries in the 1950s and 1960s to work in oil and gas industries, they brought this tradition with them. Gulf locals encountered the drink, adapted it to their own preferences — simpler spice blend, stronger brew, more emphasis on cardamom and saffron — and the result became karak: the Gulf’s own version of spiced milk tea, now inseparable from regional culture.

What Goes Into Our Karak

Every batch of our signature karak begins with quality loose-leaf black tea — the foundation that gives the drink its colour, caffeine, and tannin structure. To this we add:

  • Green cardamom: the essential Gulf karak spice — citrusy, aromatic, warming, and the note that makes a karak unmistakably itself rather than just milky tea
  • Saffron: a few threads, steeped slowly, adding the characteristic golden warmth and subtle earthiness that defines authentic Gulf karak
  • Evaporated milk: the reason karak is creamier and richer than ordinary tea — evaporated milk’s concentration gives the drink its signature thick mouthfeel

The mixture is simmered together, not just steeped and strained — the long, slow simmer is what concentrates the flavours, deepens the colour to that characteristic amber, and creates the smooth body that a rushed preparation never achieves.

Karak and Chapati: The Pairing This Brand Was Built Around

It’s not an accident that we serve karak alongside every chapati on our menu. The combination is one of the most natural pairings in the Gulf region — and the ‘Oasis Duo’ (two thermoses of our signature karak alongside a box of fresh, assorted chapatis) exists precisely because we believe this combination is the fullest expression of what Tea Oasis is.

Karak’s spiced warmth plays beautifully against the richness of cheese, egg, or peanut butter chapati. Its slight sweetness creates a genuine contrast with savoury labneh, za’atar, or naqaniq fillings. Even sweet chapati options (honey, lotus, hazelnut) find a counterpoint in karak’s warmth and body that a plain tea doesn’t provide.

The Health Dimension

The spices that make karak taste the way it does also carry documented nutritional properties. Cardamom has been associated with improved digestion, anti-inflammatory effects, and antioxidant activity. Ginger, used in some preparations, supports circulation and further reduces inflammation. Black tea itself is a well-documented source of antioxidant polyphenols linked to cardiovascular health. Karak is not a health tonic, but it is genuinely not just sugar and milk either.

FAQ ON Tea Oasis

The name reflects our identity. Karak tea — our signature spiced milk tea — is the drink that defines everything we serve. It’s the natural companion to every chapati on our menu, and the drink Gulf culture has built entire social rituals around. ‘Tea Oasis’ is what we are.

Karak is a thick, spiced milk tea brewed by simmering black tea leaves with cardamom, saffron, and evaporated milk for an extended time. The word ‘karak’ means ‘strong’ or ‘concentrated’ in Urdu. The result is a deep amber, warmly spiced, creamy drink noticeably richer than standard tea — Saudi Arabia and the Gulf’s equivalent of what masala chai is in India.

Karak traces to the Indian subcontinent, where tea was cultivated under British colonial influence in the 19th century and local chaiwallas (street tea vendors) developed their own spiced milk tea traditions. South Asian migrant workers brought this tradition to the Gulf in the 1950s and 1960s, where it was adapted — stronger brew, simpler spice blend centred on cardamom and saffron — and became the karak we know today.

This is our signature — the drink we were named for. Our karak is brewed to a recipe we’ve refined specifically for our menu and our customers. It’s adjusted for your preferred sweetness level on request, served fresh in every order, and calibrated to complement rather than compete with our chapati fillings.

Chapati is the natural pairing — specifically any of the savoury fillings on our menu. Cheese, egg, za’atar, labneh, naqaniq, and peanut butter all find a natural counterpoint in karak’s warmth and spice. For sweet chapati, karak still works well — the Oasis Duo (two thermoses of karak + a mixed chapati box) exists precisely because this combination is the fullest expression of what we serve.

The core ingredients carry genuine nutritional properties — black tea provides antioxidant polyphenols linked to cardiovascular health, cardamom has documented anti-inflammatory and digestive benefits, and saffron has antioxidant properties. Karak’s calorie content comes primarily from the milk and sugar, and it’s best enjoyed as part of a balanced approach rather than as a health drink, but it’s far from an empty indulgence.
